It’s truly astonishing seeing the scope of this work and the seemingly glacial pace at which it is trundling along. As of last weekend, not much has changed except that the new bridge has had its eastern abutment extended to the far bank.

The result of the new abutment is to constrict the river at this point and warnings have been placed south of the bridge about the dangerous flow.

Do you know the estimated date of completion? I’m looking forward to a trek down there before long.

The wall was to have been completed by the end of March so it’s well behind schedule – they’re still in the preparation stage. I get the impression that there will be an extension of the far abutment along the existing retaining wall to allow access for the crane and that will take a long time. With dozens of huge blocks then needing to be individually coaxed into place, I can see this going on all summer.

I’m starting to wonder if the extension of that abutment might become a permanent feature. It would certainly make sense from an erosion-control perspective by allowing for a less steep embankment on that side.

That’s a good point, Hans. I was wondering how they would handle the removal of the old wall. This would keep the bank stable and add a barrier in front. Time will tell!
